Wearing a mask in public in New York is mandatory, and the state is calling on New Yorkers everywhere to help get out the message.
To promote the CDC recommended measure, that became a state order in April, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a contest that invites New Yorkers to submit videos on why it’s necessary to wear a mask with the winning ad to be used as a public service announcement.

“Each one of us keeps the other safe — every person has a responsibility here, social responsibility. And that’s what wearing a mask is all about,” Cuomo said during a news conference on Tuesday. “The right thing to do is to wear a mask because it’s not about you, it’s about my health. You wear a mask to protect me, I wear a mask to protect you.”
The Wear a Mask contest was inspired by Cuomo’s own daughter, Mariah Kennedy Cuomo, who was urging her dad to promote New Yorkers wearing masks more. The governor joked that he was “guilty” and said he could admit “my weaknesses and my flaws, I’m a work in progress.”

The videos, which have to be submitted by May 15, should be 30 seconds or less and include someone wearing a mask over their mouth and nose. Mariah (as a volunteer) along with the Department of Health will then pick the five finalists and put them online for people to vote on.
To submit a video, people should post it on social media and tag both #NewYorkTough and the governor’s handle (@nygovcuomo on Twitter and Instagram, or @GovernorAndrewCuomo on Facebook).
“99 percent of people are doing it and it’s great. We’re talking about that 1 percent,” Cuomo said about wearing the face coverings, adding: “And maybe we’ll have an ad that communicates this better than I have been able to communicate it to date.”

New York has recorded more than 321,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the New York State Department of Health. But the good news is New York does appear to be on a downward trend, Cuomo said, with the rate of new hospitalizations down.
