On Thursday, May 16, Liberty Island is opening the Statue of Liberty Museum, a $100-million project that first broke ground two years ago. Since September 11, 2001, only about 20 percent of the island’s 4.3 million visitors have been able to see the old museum —formerly located in the Statue’s pedestal — due to increased security and a new ticketing system. The new museum, which is free to anyone who purchases a ferry ticket to Liberty and Ellis Islands, will reach the other 80%, making the Statue’s history and legacy more accessible to New York City tourists and residents....

Israel’s El Al airline started testing unvaccinated travelers this week for COVID-19 at the check-in counter on flights from Tel Aviv to New York City. On Monday, 112 of the 280 passengers on the nonstop flight to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport had to undergo a rapid antigen test before stepping up to a check-in counter, Reuters reported. The results were delivered in 15 to 20 minutes and every single person tested negative, but masks were still required to be worn on the flight....

As of Monday, Malta is now reopen to fully vaccinated Americans. Travel to and from the U.S. was originally limited to 38 states — excluding Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming. Despite getting the green light from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — albeit under murky circumstances — several major cruise lines have decided against making the grand return to sailing this November. Late Tuesday, three major cruise lines — Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and MSC Cruises — canceled all or most of their sailings worldwide through the end of November. This news comes shortly after Norwegian Cruise Line extended its cancellations through the end of November, also impacting itineraries aboard Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises....

Turkish archaeologists unearthed what they believe to be a 2,500-year-old temple of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, in the Urla-Cesme peninsula of western Turkey.
