Not everyone was lucky enough to be in their hometown with loved ones in the midst of the coronavirus lockdowns. Twenty-year-old Kleon Papadimitriou, for example, was still at school at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, and even though he booked several flights home to Athens, Greece, they all kept getting canceled. Instead of giving up and accepting being quarantined in the northeastern Scottish city away from his family, Papadimitriou made the bold move to bike 2,175 miles home, CNN reported....

In 1932, Lake Placid, New York, hosted its first Olympic Games. In 1980, the town welcomed the games yet again, cementing itself as a world-class winter destination. Now, many years later, that Olympic spirit is alive and well, woven into the fabric of Whiteface Mountain, its impressive slopes, and the surrounding area. “The Olympics laid the groundwork for the whole community. Travelers may not have to wait until summer to get back to Vietnam’s gorgeous beaches, bustling cities, and historic sites after all. The Vietnamese tourism ministry is hopeful it will be able to fully reopen its borders to foreign visitors beginning March 15 — a full three months earlier than initially expected. Under the tourism ministry’s reopening plan, international travelers would need to test negative for COVID-19 before departure to Vietnam and again upon arrival in the country....

A retired Texas teacher who walked halfway across the country in her fight for Juneteenth to be recognized as a national holiday is getting another reason to celebrate. In 2016, Opal Lee walked from her home in Fort Worth, Texas, all the way to Washington, D.C. She was 89 at the time and logged 2.5 miles a day to recognize the two and a half years Black Texans had to wait for news of the Emancipation Proclamation....

Forget tofu or soy milk. Entrepreneurs out of South Africa have opened a pop-up restaurant dedicated to serving gourmet meals, all made from alternative, insect-based ingredients. The Insect Experience opened in Cape Town last month and has been successfully serving trepidatious customers dishes like chickpea black-fly-larvae croquettes, polenta fries made from mopane worm flour and mealworm biscuits. Pasta with black soldier fly larvae, garnished with mealworms is one Insect Experience dish....

Delta announced that Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal at the Atlanta airport is ready to become America’s first “biometric terminal.” This means travelers will be able to use facial recognition technology “from curb to gate.” As Travel+Leisure previously reported, Delta has been working on the technology, which will help guests seamlessly move through airport security, for some time. The system will be implemented from check-in through boarding and will employ facial scanning machines at the self-service kiosks, baggage drop-off counters, TSA checkpoint, and all Terminal F boarding gates....

Christie’s International Real Estate released a statement on Thursday that the tiny village of Sätra Brunn, in Sala, Sweden, is now for sale. The Swedish village, located about 90 minutes from Stockholm, has a rich, 300-year history and is famous for being a popular spa destination, according to Christie’s. First established in the 1700s by a medical officer named Samuel Skragge, who discovered a natural mineral spring in what is now known as Sätra Brunn and bought the surrounding 60 acres of land, according to the New York Times....

The Canadian government extended a ban on cruise ships until at least 2022 just weeks before its initial restrictions were set to expire. The ban, which has been extended until Feb. 28, 2022, applies to all cruise vessels carrying more than 100 people. The ban was first implemented in March 2020 and was set to expire Feb. 28, 2021. “As Canadians continue to do their part to reduce the spread of COVID-19, our government continues to work hard to ensure Canada’s transportation system remains safe,” Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra said in a statement on Thursday....

Travelers in Orlando will now be able to reserve a timed spot for airport security thanks to a new effort from the biometric security company, Clear. The reservation system, available at Orlando International Airport (MCO), allows passengers to see available time slots for Transportation Security Administration checkpoints and reserve one for their party for free using the company’s reserve.clearme.com website, the company shared with Travel + Leisure on Thursday. Travelers will then receive a QR code they can use in the special Clear “reservation lane” at security....

Delta will reopen its Sky Club lounges around the country throughout July, implementing new standards for health and safety. Sky Clubs in Chicago O’Hare, Denver, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, and San Francisco will reopen, according to a blog post from the airline on Wednesday. They join the list of clubs — Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, New York LaGuardia and JFK, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Seattle, Salt Lake City and D.C. — that are already open....
