I have long been fascinated by maps of islands. An island will forever be bounded by its shores; because of these inherent limits, it offers the possibility of knowing a place in its entirety. And yet I find that islands, despite their finitude, often prove to be unknowable. The closer you look, the more is revealed. The Isle of Skye is one of these unknowable places. Unfurling from the west coast of Scotland like the wing of a prehistoric beast, its northerly tip reaches toward the rocky parenthesis of the Outer Hebrides and the great Atlantic beyond....

Despite New York abandoning its 14-day quarantine COVID-19 protocol for out-of-state travelers earlier this week, neighboring New Jersey will stick to its original travel advisory plan. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced Monday that New Jersey will continue its plan that has been in place since June to stop new coronavirus cases from entering the state. The plan initially applied to New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. Anyone who travels to New Jersey from a list of certain states is still required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival....

New York City’s performing arts industry is coming back, and you might notice a few changes to Lincoln Center. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts announced on Tuesday that it is commissioning Mimi Lien, set designer and MacArthur Genius grantee, to reimagine Josie Robertson Plaza as a green space where people can relax and enjoy some pop-up performances. Called “The GREEN,” this revamped space is part of Lincoln Center’s Restart Stages initiative to help kickstart New York City’s arts industry....

For the first time in about 3,000 years, wild Tasmanian Devils are roaming mainland Australia. With Scotland under lockdown, a group dedicated to helping the nation reduce its travel-related carbon emissions is hard at work on the country’s first hydrogen-powered train. The group plans to unveil a fully operational demo version of their project at the COP26 climate change conference later this year in Glasgow. Countries all around the world announced travel restrictions from southern Africa amid the emergence of a new and concerning COVID-19 variant, omicron, as experts work to determine how much of a threat it poses. Starting Monday, the United States is implementing a ban on travel from South Africa along with seven other neighboring countries “as a precautionary measure until we have more information,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) outlined new protocols this week to get U.S. cruises sailing again. And it will all begin with a few intrepid volunteers. On Wednesday, the CDC released its updated requirements for “simulated voyages” filled with volunteer passengers so cruise companies can prove they can sail without spreading COVID-19. “With the issuance of these documents, cruise ship operators now have all the necessary requirements and recommendations they need to start simulated voyages before resuming restricted passenger voyages,” the CDC said in a statement....

Burning Man 2017 returned on August 27 to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, the location where the festival has been held for the last 28 years. The first Burning Man ceremony was in 1986, on San Francisco’s Baker Beach.
