Two and a half years ago, my family and I took off for a five-month trip around the world. Long story short, that five-month trip has evolved into 100 weeks of full-time travel, covering 50 countries and well over 150 flights. We’ve turned our love for travel, family time, and journal-keeping into full-time jobs. Now, through our Instagram, @thebucketlistfamily, we work as family travel journalists. For people wanting to do something similar, we’ve put together a few thoughts on how we became travel journalists, and how to successfully take that plunge into the world of full-time travel....

When I told people I was going to Oman, a small country on the Arabian Sea, I was mostly met with blank stares. O-what? Where was it exactly? Was it safe to visit? To be honest, though I’ve traveled to the Middle East many times, I’d barely heard of it myself. In a turbulent region, it is an oasis of calm, and therefore not the type of place you tend to read about in the news....

No surprise here, new data shows that everyone is desperate for a vacation in 2021. According to Expedia’s 2021 Vacation Deprivation study, 64% of Americans defined themselves as “vacation deprived,” a 3% increase from last year and an 11% increase from five years ago. It makes sense. Last year, 42% of survey respondents were forced to cancel at least one trip due to the pandemic and 47% used their vacation days not for trips but to take cyare of family members instead....

Delta Air Lines may offer free onboard Wi-Fi as soon as one year from now, its CEO revealed. Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in an interview with Barron’s this week, “Our goal is to make Wi-Fi free with high-speed quality.” But don’t expect free web browsing on your next flight. Bastian went on to say that it will likely “take another year or two to make that happen.” However, the CEO seems fully committed to the idea....

Visas obtained in advance of travel are required for all foreign visitors to India, regardless of country of origin, purpose of visit, or length of stay. International travelers who arrive in India without a passport or visa may be immediately deported. Check the website of your nearest Indian embassy for the latest information, as immigration and customs rules often change. Tourists who wish to travel to India solely for personal (rather than business) travel, and who plan to stay no longer than 30 days, can easily apply for an e-visa online....

If you want to take a hike on the famous and gorgeous Kalalau Trail, be prepared to make an advance reservation. Since severe thunderstorms and floods in 2018 ravaged the coastline on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, major recovery efforts have been underway to return Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park and Hā’ena State Park, and the Kalalau Trail to their original beauty. The two parks and hiking trail actually reopened back in 2019, according to The Points Guy, but officials are still concerned with potential damage to the environment, especially since Kauai has grown exponentially in popularity....

Club Med Quebec, the first-ever Club Med resort in Canada, opened on Dec. 3, bringing an all-inclusive, ski-in, ski-out experience to the charming region of Charlevoix, located about an hour and a half from Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport. I got to experience the property firsthand ahead of its official opening, hitting the slopes (and the après-ski bar, spa, and more) for a taste of the Club Med Quebec experience....

Nicaragua is a postcard-worthy destination that harkens back to simpler travel times. Lined with emerald-green coasts dotted with old-school fishing villages, it’s a place where you can surf nearly empty lineups as if you were still in the ’70s. I’ve sailed around its Pacific coast in a catamaran, stopping at deserted islands to watch dolphins frolic by. I’ve danced salsa in a corner bar in Granada, one of the oldest colonial cities in Latin America....

From far away, The Whale museum on the southern coast of Norway looks like, well, a whale — the tail of a whale emerging from water, to be more precise. But upon closer inspection, visitors will find that this architectural marvel is actually a scenic viewpoint and an educational center where they can learn about the local marine life. A trip to the grocery store has never been this creepy. Omega Mart, an experiential art installation from Meow Wolf, is coming to AREA15 in Las Vegas in early 2021 — and it’s the unsettling, Lovecraftian nightmare (but in a good way) that you’ve been waiting for. Meow Wolf is a Santa Fe-based arts and entertainment company that previously installed another explorable art installation in New Mexico called House of Eternal Return....

This year’s World’s Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world. The past year put the entire travel industry through the wringer, perhaps no segment more so than cruising....

South Africa has become the latest country to ease pandemic-related border rules, eliminating the pre-arrival COVID-19 test for vaccinated travelers. Going forward, South Africa will allow vaccinated international travelers to simply show proof of their inoculation to enter the country, South African Tourism shared with Travel + Leisure. Unvaccinated travelers will still be welcome but will have to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of their trip....

Move over Netherlands, there’s another flower-filled destination ready to welcome visitors to its perfectly Instagrammable fields this spring: Carlsbad, California. Airbnb is teaming up with the National Park Foundation to help travelers explore nature as well as lesser-known (and less crowded) national parks. The new campaign, launched this week — in celebration of the National Park Service’s 104th birthday — encourages travelers and nature lovers to visit less traversed national parks that are a short drive from their hometowns. The site will now feature a new page dedicated to listings nearby national parks....

Flights to far off destinations may be hard to come by these days, but budget airline easyJet is bringing in-flight service right to their customers — complete with a drinks cart and served by a uniformed flight crew. Partnering with food delivery company Deliveroo, easyJet flight attendants will be serving Bloody Mary’s, gin and tonics, prosecco, and snacks, to grounded customers in the UK next week, the airline shared with Travel + Leisure....

When does spring begin? That depends on who you ask. Meteorological spring started on March 1 and continues through the end of May, with summer starting on June 1. Astronomical spring, however, begins at the equinox, which was March 19 in North America. Sky-watchers already know that spring is well underway. How? It’s written in the stars!
