More than 1 million people passed through U.S. airports on three consecutive days this weekend, according to the Transportation Security Administration, the first time the agency has recorded numbers like that since March. On Friday, the TSA screened just under 1.066 passengers, followed by 1.073 on Saturday, and 1.065 on Sunday. This was far lower than this weekend last year when the agency saw over 2 million passengers each day, but it showed Americans are hitting the skies before the Christmas holiday, despite advice from experts to hunker down....

COVID-19 testing may be helping pave the way for the return to travel, but keeping up with evolving requirements and paperwork can be overwhelming. United Airlines is hoping to make the process a little smoother on its flights to Hawaii with a new preclearance program that allows passengers to proceed directly to paradise upon landing. Beginning Feb. 1, United will allow Hawaii-bound passengers to share their negative COVID-19 test results before boarding and skip the document screening lines that would normally await at their destination....

Slowly but surely, we’re heading toward scenic spaceflights for the masses — or at least the wealthy masses. Virgin Galactic, one of the major players in the space tourism game, has just revealed the newest addition to its fleet, the sleek and shiny SpaceShip III. After much anticipation, Virgin Galactic has revealed what future astronauts can expect from their spaceship cabins. Predictably, the cabins are beautiful and futuristic, high tech and sleek. ‘’When we created Virgin Galactic, we started with what we believed would be an optimal customer experience and then built the spaceship around it,” Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group, said during the unveiling on Tuesday. “This cabin has been designed specifically to allow thousands of people like you and me to achieve the dream of spaceflight safely – and that is incredibly exciting....

Amtrak is heading to the Berkshires thanks to a new seasonal service the rail company is kicking off this summer. The new route, called the Berkshire Flyer, will bring passengers between New York City and Pittsfield, Mass. The service will start as a pilot on July 8 and will be operated on the weekends throughout the summer with a similar schedule planned for next year. Amtrak President and CEO Stephen Gardner said the new route “will offer a more comfortable and convenient transportation option, that’s also more environmentally friendly, for people traveling between New York City and Berkshire County, along with easy access to musical performances at Tanglewood....

A loud boom sounded from above. It was so deep I could feel it in my chest. Snow patrol was hard at work on this icy morning setting off miniature bombs to mitigate the risk of avalanches — a necessary task at the nearly 13,000-foot elevation where I stood.
