The Bahamas will once again allow American travelers to come to the islands, but will require all visitors to quarantine for two weeks at their own expense, the Ministry of Tourism & Aviation confirmed to Travel + Leisure on Wednesday. The new protocols come days after the country’s prime minister banned visitors amid a spike in COVID-19 cases in the United States and has implemented strict rules for both locals and tourists....

Since the April fire that greatly damaged Paris’ Notre Dame cathedral, more than a few designs have circulated for how the structure can be rebuilt. While some people want the cathedral restored to its exact former glory, others are looking toward a more modern look for the building. Swedish design firm Ulf Mejergren Architects has proposed a public pool that will take over the entire rooftop space of Notre Dame cathedral, The Guardian reported....

After a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney World’s Cirque du Soleil show has an opening date. Initially slated to open in April 2020, the opening of “Drawn to Life” was postponed. And now, a year later Cirque du Soleil announced that the show is now scheduled to begin performances at Disney Springs on Nov. 18. Hawaii extended its COVID-19 state of emergency until July 31 as it slowly begins to reopen the state. Beginning June 16, locals will be able to travel between Hawaiian islands without having to quarantine for two weeks. Passengers at airports will have their temperature taken by a scanner — anyone with a fever of more than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit will not be permitted to fly. Out-of-state travelers who land in the island state must undergo a self-imposed 14-day quarantine, as Gov....

Hawaii’s Gov. David Ige imposed capacity restrictions on restaurants, bars, and gatherings, citing a surge in coronavirus cases in the state due in large part to the delta variant, though travel policies remain unchanged. Capacity has been reduced to 50% for all indoor activities, including in restaurants and bars, Ige said at a news conference on Tuesday. People must remain seated at tables at least six feet apart and masks must be worn at all times except when actively eating or drinking....

Herb Kelleher, the founder of Southwest Airlines, died at the age of 87 on Thursday morning, the company announced in a statement on its blog. The eccentric businessman, born in New Jersey in 1931, served as Southwest’s Executive Chairman from March 1978 to May 2008 and as President and CEO from September 1981 through June 2001, according to the company blog. Kelleher incorporated Air Southwest, Inc. with Rollin King in 1967, but after some legal battles and a name change in June 1971, Kelleher officially founded Southwest Airlines, a low-cost, Texas-based airline....

“The Muppets” are now an official part of London history. In honor of what would have been “Muppets” creator Jim Henson’s 85th birthday, English Heritage — a charitable organization that manages historic monuments around England — placed one of its famous blue plaques on the puppeteer’s former north London home this week. There are more than 950 blue plaques around London that mark the homes and workspaces of famous Londoners. And although Henson was American, he became an honorary Londoner in the ’70s, when “The Muppet Show” was commissioned for British television....

Ken Burns loves to talk. The legendary filmmaker admits he can get long-winded, which makes sense when you think about it. “You’ll remember I’m a filmmaker who makes 10-part series that last 18 hours,” he jokes. Bars in New Orleans have closed their doors once again due to a rise in coronavirus cases. Over the weekend, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards issued new restrictions that limit bars to serving only takeout or delivery after partially reopening in June. Alcohol-wise, bars are allowed to serve packaged liquor and beer and frozen daiquiris for delivery or takeout, The Associated Press reported. According to a news release shared on Saturday by Edwards’ office, “Louisiana has identified at least 36 outbreaks, impacting at least 405 people, involving bars…Public health officials believe going to bars is a higher public health risk than visiting other types of businesses because people are socializing and cannot wear masks when they drink....

One of Africa’s most compelling destinations will begin welcoming back commercial flights and tourists starting on August 1. Rwanda had, like so many other destinations, curtailed inbound flights in March to slow the spread of COVID-19. But since then, the country has been largely successful at limiting the impact of the pandemic, with fewer than 2,000 cases of COVID-19 reported, according to aggregated statistics compiled by Google. Now, the country says, it’s time to welcome people back to places like Volcanoes National Park for encounters with mountain gorillas — not to mention other highlights, including Nyungwe Forest National Park and Lake Kivu....

It’s official: Southwest Airlines is making travel to Hawaii more affordable than ever. Last week, Southwest received FAA approval to offer service to Hawaii, and the budget airline isn’t wasting any time offering cheap flights to the Aloha State.
