The European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA released the closest images of the sun ever taken on Thursday. This world looks otherworldly sometimes. Video has resurfaced of a stunning airplane landing at Maniitsoq Airport in Greenland that feels out of this world. And although the footage was most definitely filmed on Earth, anyone would be forgiven for thinking it’s lost footage from a “Star Wars” film. At dawn, an Air Greenland Dash 8 aircraft approached the exceptionally-short runway at Maniitsoq Airport. From above, the ice masses of Greenland more closely resemble the ice planet Hoth than anything down here on our planet (as evidenced by several commenters’ responses on YouTube)....

More than 100 American passengers who were stranded on a cruise ship in Brazil for over a week were flown back to the U.S., President Donald Trump said at a news briefing on Monday. The 103 citizens, along with two permanent residents, had been on the Silver Shadow, a Silversea Cruises ship that holds up to 388 guests and 302 crew members, according to the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Brazil....

The latest trend in New England ski resorts is — skipping them altogether? Indeed, it seems like more New Englanders than ever are grabbing their skis and heading to the backcountry. “It’s a perfect storm of things coming together that have raised interest in backcountry skiing this year,” said Kurt Niiler, author of “Presidential Skiing: A Guide To Backcountry Skiing In New Hampshire’s Presidential Range.” Niiler thinks skiers are foregoing chairlifts this season thanks to the availability of backcountry gear, which is lighter and stronger than ever before, as well as the fluid and often frustrating ways the resorts have felt with the Covid-19 pandemic....

The White House plans to reopen for tours later this month at 18 percent of its normal capacity, the office of first lady Melania Trump has announced. Visitors two years and older will be required to wear a mask or similar face covering. The National Park Service, U.S. Secret Service, and White House Visitors Office staff working the tour will also don masks and gloves while encouraging social distancing among visitors....

The land border closure on non-essential travel between Canada the United States and Mexico was extended once again this week until at least June 21, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed on Thursday. “To fight #COVID19 spread and protect our citizens, the U.S. is continuing restrictions on non-essential travel at land borders through June 21, while allowing essential trade & travel,” DHS tweeted. “We’re working closely with Canada & Mexico to safely ease restrictions as conditions improve....
