One of Charleston’s largest hotels has a history 14 years in the making.

The Hotel Bennett opened in 2019 but the initial plans for the hotel were announced way back in 2005.

Owned by hotelier Michael Bennett and his company, Bennett Hospitality, the hotel is named after the Charleston-based Bennett family and is managed via a partnership with luxury hotel company Salamander Hotels and Resorts.

Bennett, who has been involved in various projects over the years to renovate aging buildings throughout Charleston, has owned the land on which the hotel stands for nearly a quarter of a century. His family is no stranger to the area — his father shined shoes during the Great Depression across from where the hotel is now. Today, Bennett Hospitality is one of the largest locally owned companies in Charleston.

Legal disputes delayed the project, with preservationists suing after the city rezoned the site in 2007 to allow for the 105-foot-tall building. The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled against the opponents in a 2012 decision and the Hotel Bennett plans had to go back through the approval process for a second time before finally being approved. Construction finally began in April of 2015.

Today, it’s one of the largest and most luxurious hotels in the Holy City. The 179-room property draws inspiration from the grand hotels of Europe and features a combination of guestrooms and suites, a signature restaurant overlooking Marion Square, a bar and lounge, a French patisserie, a spa, and a rooftop pool complete with a bar and cabanas.

Guests will also find more than 12,000 square feet of event and meeting spaces, including a 6,600-square-foot Grand Ballroom with arched windows, wrought-iron gates, and a 30-foot ceiling.

Rooms boast floor-to-ceiling windows with views over Charleston’s buzzing streets, plus private bars and terraces.
